Builders and designers love the benefits of ICF construction. However, you must use the right tools and materials for ICF installation. Part two of this post will explore the materials you need for insulated concrete forms. You can return to part one to learn about using the proper tools.
Successful ICF Installation with the Right Tools and Materials
Materials for ICF Projects
A successful ICF project requires suitable materials. The following are the basic materials for an ICF project:
- ICF Blocks: The ICF blocks are the core component of the project. They serve as the formwork for pouring concrete and insulation for the structure. Most projects require various types of blocks.
- Rebar: Rebar reinforces the concrete. Beyond proper placement, there is also the question of fiberglass vs. steel rebar.
- Footing Form Material: Before installing ICF blocks, footings must be poured to support the walls. The footing supports the concrete, ensures a level base, and transfers the load to the ground. Additionally, footing forms are often wood or metal.
- Window Buck Material: Window bucks are frames used to maintain openings for windows and doors. They ensure the space stays open and intact while pouring concrete. Window bucks are commonly metal or wood.
- ICF Bracing System: ICFs require bracing systems to stabilize the forms through installation and the pour. More than that, the braces prevent shifting and ensure reliable ICF construction.
- Spray Foam: Spray foam fills gaps between ICF blocks to create airtight seals and prevent thermal bridging to ensure a reliable insulation ICF structure.
- Damp Proofing: To extend the structure’s life and reduce maintenance, you must prevent moisture infiltration on ICF walls. Typically, you’ll use a waterproof membrane.
- ICF Screws: Contactors will need two and three-inch ICF screws for a variety of applications. You can use them to secure bracing systems, window bucks, and more.
- Wire Ties: Wire ties are necessary to secure rebar in the forms. This ensures the rebar stays in place during the pour.
- Anchor Bolts: Anchor bolts connect walls to the foundation or secure other structural elements. Furthermore, they provide a secure and reliable connection between the walls and other parts of the structure.
- Simpson Hangers: These metal brackets attach framing components to concrete walls. They are used to install elements like beams and joists for wood framing.
- Burmon Truss Connectors: These are metal roof connectors for anchoring roof trusses. They offer a reliable way to connect the roof construction to ICF walls.
Choosing the correct materials can significantly affect a successful ICF installation. So if you need help selecting materials, contact your ICF supplier. They should have guides for material selection or be able to offer advice.
